#Adath Emanu-El
November 25, 7 pm
An Interfaith Thanksgiving Eve service at Adath Emanu-El, bringing together mosques, synagogues and churches of South Jersey, as well as the Jewish Community Relations Council of South Jersey.
Rabbi Marc Schneier, President of The Foundation for Ethnic Understanding, will be the featured speaker. He will speak about the inspirational events in Voorhees, N.J. in the wake of 9-11 in which the Jewish and Christian communities supported the efforts of Muslims in that New Jersey town to build a mosque despite strong opposition in the community. The Voorhees Mosque was eventually approved by the Zoning Board and built. Members of that mosque will be among those attending the Interfaith Thanksgiving Eve service, including Mrs. Zahida Rahman, widow of Zia Rahman, the inspirational former leader of the Voorhees Mosque, who passed away earlier this year after a long battle with cancer.
Rabbi Schneier will pay tribute to the work of Zia Rahman and other fighters against Islamophobia, anti-Semitism and other forms of bigotry in South Jersey, stating that the story of the Vorhees Mosque should be an example to people of good will everywhere.

A delegation from Kehilath Sephardim, a congregation largely composed of Bukharian Jews from Uzbekistan will visit Jamaica Muslim Center from 2-4 PM Sunday, November 15. They will watch a documentary film Cities of Light about Muslim-Jewish cooperation in medieval Spain and then discuss the fact that the Bukharian Jews also lived in a predominantly Muslim culture in Uzbekistan for hundreds of years, with Jews and Muslims sharing a cultural affinity and mutual respect. Progressive Spirit Within Judaism/Christianity/Islam: A Dialog with Amad Shakur, Rabbi Judy Schindler and Dr. Stephen Shoemaker” on Saturday, November 14th, from 4:00-5:30 in Heaton Hall at Myers Park Baptist Church. This challenging discussion builds upon more than a decade of existing dialog and partnership between Temple Beth El and Myers Park Baptist Church in dialogue. For the past several years, our circle of conversation has been expanded to include the Islamic community and we are pleased to include Amad Shakur to this year’s discussion.
Our efforts to move toward peace through understanding and dialog here in Charlotte will be mirrored throughout the country. This program is part of a broader effort by The Foundation for Ethnic Understanding , which is planning an historic event with dozens of mosques and synagogues across the continent that are all linking up for a weekend of twinning. Please join us for this important event that will offer an opportunity to further build the foundations for interfaith work in Charlotte, North Carolina.
