Latino and Jewish members of Congress united with The Foundation for Ethnic Understanding to take the next step toward strengthening Latino/Jewish relations at The Foundation's 1st Annual Latino/Jewish Congressional Awards Ceremony and Reception on February 5, 2003. The event was co-sponsored by The National Council of La Raza and the World Jewish Congress. Congressmen Bob Filner (D-CA) and Silvestre Reyes (D-TX) were honored for their dedication to strengthening Latino/Jewish relations within their communities. Congressmembers Tom Lantos (D-CA) and Ciro Rodriguez (D-TX), the chair of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, presented the awards to their colleagues.
Also in attendance were Ambassador Eduardo P. Amadeo of Argentina and Ambassador Louis Alberto Moreino of Colombia. Speakers included Foundation for Ethnic Understanding President Rabbi Marc Schneier, Raul Yzaguirre, President and CEO of The National Council of La Raza, Dr. Israel Singer, Chairman of the World Jewish Congress and Dr. Avi Beker, Secretary General of the World Jewish Congress. In his remarks, Rabbi Marc Schneier commented that, "The Latino and Jewish communities are guilty of overlooking the obvious - a natural alliance of shared values and mutual concerns to advance a common agenda, both domestically and abroad. Let us open our eyes to a high level of shared social and political values between our two communities."
