Foundation Hosts 3rd Annual Black/ Jewish Congressional Awards Ceremony

Foundation Presents 2001 Congressional Racial Harmony Awards To Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson (D-TX) and Congressman Jerrold Nadler (D-NY)

 

On June 14 2001, The Foundation For Ethnic Understanding, under the leadership of Rabbi Marc Schneier, returned to Washington D.C. for the Third Annual Black/Jewish Congressional Awards Ceremony and Reception. This year, The Foundation honored Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson (D-TX) and Congressman Jerrold Nadler (D-NY) with the prestigious “Racial Harmony Award” for their dedication to strengthening Black/Jewish relations within their communities.  Congresswomen Sheila Jackson Lee (D-TX) and Congressman Steve Israel (D-NY) presented this year’s awards.

This year approximately 20 members of Congress attended the ceremony. Congressman Benjamin Gilman (R-NY) gave the introductory address, and Congressman Charles Rangel keynoted the affair. Other speakers included Congressman John Lewis (D-GA), Dr. Israel Singer, Secretary General of the World Jewish Congress, Hillary Shelton, Washington Director of the NAACP, Broderick Johnson, Vice President of Congressional Relations for the AT&T Foundation, and Lawrence Kopp, Executive Director of The Foundation. The event was covered by the Black Entertainment Television and by the Jewish Telegraph Agency
