The Foundation Celebrates Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day

Speaking Tour

Rabbi Marc Schneier participated in several Martin Luther King Jr. Day events in the New York Metropolitan area. On January 12th, Rabbi Schneier gave the invocation at the New York State Urban League's Third Annual Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Symposium. Deputy Mayor Dennis Walcott was a participant of the event. On January 13th, Rabbi Schneier spoke at Temple Israel of Lawrence, NY. At the Simon Senior Citizen Center- Riverdale YM-YWHA, Rabbi Schneier spoke to an audience that included students from SAR Academy on January 14th. At the New York Synagogue's Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day commemoration, special musical guests included Peter Yarrow of Peter Paul and Mary and The Galillee Ensemble. Rabbi Schneier discussed Dr. King's enduring influence on our society today. On Monday, January 17th, Rabbi Schneier and Russell Simmons were invited to speak at the Museum of Jewish Heritage - A Living Memorial to the Holocaust. Media in attendance included CNN. Rabbi Schneier and Mr. Simmons spoke to a diverse audience which included local dignitaries and school children in the area. The Moderator was Jonathan Rieder, Professor of Sociology at Barnard College.

In February, Rabbi Schneier was part of New York State NAACP's Measure of A Man Award reception and ACRES's (American Civil Rights Education Services, Inc.) Fourth Annual Gala Benefit. The ACRES Gala celebrated the academic and leadership achievements of ACRES youth and honored the achievements of civil rights movement leaders. A mini-documentary of ACRES on the Southern Freedom Trail was shown.

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Commemorative Ad

The Foundation for Ethnic Understanding launched its 3rd Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Commemoration Ad Program in partnership with the UJA-Federation of New York and the JCRC of New York. The MLK day program involved compiling a listing of the various MLK commemorations held at local synagogues, schools and Jewish Community Centers and placing full-page ads in major ethnic newspapers. The ad, listing 35 such events appeared in the Forward, Jewish Week, Jewish Press, and Long Island Jewish World. To see the ad, please click here.
