The Foundation for Ethnic Understanding strongly condemns the horrific terrorist attacks that took place in Brussels earlier today. Our thoughts and prayers are with those who were killed in these savage bombings and their loved ones, as well as the many who were grievously injured.
Nothing can justify acts of mass murder such as those carried out against innocent civilians at the Brussels Airport and Mollenbeek Metro Station. Certainly these attacks violate the core values of Islam and the Quranic teaching that “If any one killed a person, it would be as if he killed the whole of mankind; and if any one saved a life, it would be as if he saved the life of the whole of mankind…” -The Holy Quran (Chapter Five, Verse 32).
This is an attack not only on Brussels, but on all of Europe, of which Brussels is the heart. It is also an attack on the most basic values of democracy, justice and mutual acceptance between people of diverse religious and ethnic communities that animate our interconnected 21st Century world.
FFEU, which has as its mission to strengthen ties of communication and cooperation between Muslims and Jews, in Europe, North America and around the world, will redouble our efforts, together with our friends and allies in Belgium, France and across Continent, to fight terrorism and extremism; to combat Islamophobia and anti-Semitism, and work for the creation of a just and inclusive Europe for people of all religious and ethnic identities.
The more the depraved people committed these acts endeavor to destroy our most sacred values, the more people of conscience from all religious and ethnic communities must come together to uphold them. If we stand united, there is no doubt that we will defeat the evil that threatens all of us.
