Southeast Asian Resource Center Holds Strategy Meeting on Capitol Hill
On Monday, June 25th the Southeast Asian Resource
Action Center (SEARAC) held its Strategy Meeting at the National Education
Association on Capitol Hill. For this educational event, SEARAC brought
together Asian Pacific American organizations in order to educate and
discuss with them the importance of potential legislation which would
turn nearly one hundred American colleges and universities into Asian
American Serving Institutions, much like Historically Black Colleges and
Universities and Tribal Colleges. With this designation schools would
receive a specified government stipend to finance the education of these
students.
Alicia Simmons, Congressional Outreach Director, spoke to the group of
influential Asian American organizations and leaders and discussed our
work and outreach initiatives to the Asian American community and its
young leaders. The Foundation also lent its support to these organizations
as a networking resource on Capitol Hill. Other Participants in the session
included representatives from the Asian and Pacific Islander American
Scholarship Fund, Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus, Japanese
American Citizen's League, Orthodox Church in America, and National Education
Association.
