On the eve of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Rabbi Marc Schneier was the first rabbi to speak at the prominent Islamic Center of New York. The program commemorating the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. featured a dialogue between Rabbi Schneier, who serves as President of The Foundation For Ethnic Understanding, and Grand Cleric Imam Omar Abu-Namous. Introductory remarks were made by Martin Luther King, III, son of the late civil rights leader, and Hip Hop mogul, activist and Chairman of The Foundation Russell Simmons. Martin Luther King, III, stated "I don't know if there is anything much more important we can do as we approach the King holiday than this." After affirming common elements of their faiths, Rabbi Schneier and Abu-Namous agreed to work together, jointly condemning acts of Islamophobia and Anti-Semitism, "Our beliefs and principles are the same so why should we become selfish and attack each other? Or wrong one another?" said Abu-Namous. Rabbi Israel Singer concluded the dialogue with closing remarks saying how important this initiative is and that we need to continue to keep the dream of togetherness alive.
