They were joined by other prominent leaders, activists and survivors of genocide to demand that the United States, the United Nations and conscientious governments around the world act decisively to end the slaughter of African men, women and children in Darfur, Sudan. Other speakers included ELIE WIESEL (Nobel Prize for Peace [1986], Holocaust survivor), GEORGE CLOONEY (Actor), PAUL RUSESABAGINA (Presidential Medal of Freedom recipient whose story was depicted in the movie Hotel Rwanda), REV. AL SHARPTON, CARDINAL THEODORE MCCARRICK (Archdiocese of Washington, D.C.), SENATOR BARAK OBAMA (Illinois) GOVERNOR JON CORZINE (New Jersey) and LT. GOVERNOR MICHAEL STEELE (Maryland). The Foundation took a leading role in reaching out to the African American community, bringing together various groups in order to encourage turnout at the rally. Foundation Chairman RUSSELL SIMMONS appeared on BET and major radio stations speaking about Darfur, and radio spots aired with Simmons and musician and activist, WYCLEF JEAN. The Foundation office in Washington, DC hosts regular congressional staff luncheons as an opportunity to greet, educate and build relationships between the staffs of the ethnic caucuses as well as between ethnic staffers of all congressional offices. As part of the effort to continue bringing attention to the situation in Darfur, The Foundation has chosen to hold the Sixth Annual Interethnic Congressional Staff Forum, Thursday, May 25th, on the genocide in Darfur. Speakers will include Congressman Donald Payne (invited), Congressman Michael Capuano (invited), John Prendergast, Special Advisor, International Crisis Group, and Rev.
