Weekend of Prayer and Reflection
for Victims of Genocide in Darfur

On July 13, 2005, The Foundation for Ethnic Understanding joined members of congress at a press event encouraging religious and political leaders to participate in a National Weekend of Prayer and Reflection for Victims of Genocide in Darfur, Sudan. Members of Congress present at the weekend’s press event included The Foundation’s Executive Director, Lawrence Kopp and Congressmen Robert Wexler, Donald M. Payne, Henry Waxman, Alcee Hastings, Charles Rangel, Steve Israel, Michael Capuano and Congresswoman Barbara Lee.

An estimated 400,000 Sudanese citizens have been killed in the Darfur region of Sudan. Approximately 2 million people have been displaced, and 200,000 have fled to neighboring countries. The Janjaweed Militia, with the support of the Sudanese government and military, has persisted in blocking humanitarian aid which has stopped thousands of refugees from getting the food, shelter and security they desperately need. In July of last year, Congress declared that the atrocities in Darfur constituted “genocide”. Save Darfur Coalition spearheaded this weekend of prayer and reflection in order to raise awareness about the atrocities being committed in Sudan and in the hopes of continuing to rally support for the end to the genocide.

“I believe that the success of the Weekend of Prayer was a direct by-product of the true commitment to help the people of Darfur that was so evident from organizations such as The Foundation for Ethnic Understanding and Congressional leaders like Rep. Barbara Lee”, said David Rubenstein, Coordinator of the Save Darfur Coalition.
