Congressional Hispanic Caucus Hosts Leaders from the Non-Profit, Government
& Corporate Sectors
On Tuesday, June 12th, the Congressional Hispanic
Caucus Institute hosted a panel discussion, "Corporate, Government
and Non-Profit Sectors: Their Role in Shaping Public Policy." The
event took place as part of the orientation event for the Congressional
Hispanic Caucus Institute Summer Intern program. Forty young interns,
new to DC, heard from representatives from the three sectors. The panelists
highlighted their work with Congress, discussed ways in which their sectors
are allowed to lobby and shared their personal and professional interests
in public policy and which issues they are currently discussing with members
of Congress.
Alicia Simmons, Foundation Congressional Outreach Director, represented
the non profit sector. Simmons explained the structure of non-profit organizations,
the ways organizations can be legally involved in shaping public policy,
and specifically the work The Foundation has done on matters of public
policy. She discussed the role The Foundation played as one of the first
organizations which worked to make genocide in Darfur a national discussion,
our work on the issue of race relations in the aftermath of Hurricane
Katrina and how The Foundation serves as an educational resource to members
of Congress and their staffs. Other panelists included David Ramirez,
an Associate with Mickey Ibarra and Associates, Inc., a leading government
relations and public affairs firm, and Sandra Peñaherrera, Hispanic
Serving Institute Student Program Manager at the United States Department
of Agriculture.
